Hits by, and hits on, Willa Ford
Willa Ford is back and yes, she's
still bad. The 22 -year-old
Floridian is out on tour in support
of her new single, "A Toast to
Men," the first song off her
yet-to-be-titled sophomore album.
She first gained attention with
her 2001 debut album, "Willa
Was Here," which produced the
single "I Wanna Be Bad."
GO! caught up with Willa on Wednesday
and we dished about
her ideal man, how she stays in shape
and how to get a man to
hit on you.
GO!: Are you feeling better? I heard
you had the flu.
Willa: I'm doing better, but I'm not
making it to the show in
artford tonight.
GO!: Are you still doing the show
in Nanuet?
Willa: Yeah. I have to be in New York
City on the 18th for a
photo shoot and I'm hoping I'll make
it through, I'm not
canceling there.
GO!: We've all heard "A Toast
to Men." What can we expect to
hear on the rest of the CD?
Willa: We're being really quiet about
it. It's much more mature
and there's a very cool hip-hop element.
It's like Depeche Mode
meets Madonna. It's got a really fresh,
great sound. I wrote
everything and it's very special to
me. This business is very
small and I'm very protective of my
work. I'm like a mother. If
someone did something, I may have
to slap them.
GO!: What is your ideal man?
Willa: He needs to be focused. If
he's focused, that's attractive.
I'd also like him to be stable, only
because my career is so
weird. He also has to be taller, definitely
taller.
GO!: I showed a friend of mine your
picture and she wanted me
to ask you how you stay in shape.
Willa: (laughing) It's good genes!
I do a lot of cardio, and
ancing gives you the best body. It
cuts you like a female.
Lifting weights gives you bulk. Dancing
is how it is for me.
GO!: Is it weird having your mom
as a manager? Do you ever
think before you do something, "God,
what would my mom
say?"
Willa: My mom never says anything
because it's business. In
the beginning it was hard, but now
it's fine.
GO!: Do you find that some men are
intimidated by you
because you're a beautiful woman and
are comfortable with
your sexuality?
Willa: That happens to all girls in
the clubs. In the club I'm real.
Once I start hanging out, Joe Schmo
will come hit on me
because I'm relaxed. If you want to
get hit on more, be
yourself. I was running late to a
club one night and hardly put
on any makeup and all the good-looking
guys were hitting on
me.
GO!: Will you be performing your
version of "Santa Baby"
at
the show, and what do you have to
say to the critics who say
it's too materialistic?
Willa: I won't be performing it. I
never perform it. (laughing)
And it's supposed to be greedy! It's
the joke for Christmas. It's
Christmastime. You can ask for anything.
GO!: What kind of show can people
expect at Facade?
Willa: It will be a little more of
a showcase of the record coming
up. It'll be a preview of the record.
It'll be a fun show, me and
my two dancers.
GO!: Thanks so much. I hope you
feel better. And just to let
you know, I don't think you're the
bitch a lot of people say you
are.
Willa: (laughing) Thanks. People get
bitch confused with
assertive a lot.
